"Margot Wagner is quite
possibly the most overall gifted artist I've encountered" says Barking Dog Records co-owner Linda
Coates of Margot Wagner, who has released two CDs of originals
- Open Blue Sky and Firefly.
"She has an amazing command
of both guitar and piano which perfectly underscore her soaring,
yet delicate vocals. Margot's songwriting reveals a depth of
insight and experience as well as mature artistry in crafting
both music and lyrics."
Margot brings a unique world
view to her songwriting from her time spent living and studying
in France to her years as a dancer and actress -- then she brings
those experiences to life with deft compositional style and a
clear, confident, shimmering voice. Her songs are articulate,
mature, and offer a youthful sophistication which spans folk
and pop genres.
A brilliant student, Margot was
set to enter Macalester College on a full ride scholarship when
the opportunity to pursue a music career full time presented
itself. After touring for a few months, experiencing enthusiastic
audience response to her incandescent performing style and finding
herself compelled to write more and more songs, Margot decided
to put school on hold and record her second CD, which was released
in March 2002.
The songs on Open
Blue Sky and Firefly range from
stripped-down reflective and intimate songs ("The Birds
in Paris," "Mourning Dove," "As In Autumn,"
"Poetry On Newspapers") to well-crafted full band songs
("Cup of Kindness," "Hong Kong," "Thin
Ice," "Cinnamon & Sugar," "7:53,"
"Some Words" ).
